Terminal for Buses in the Bedrock at Slussen
Geosigma has been assigned to participate in the planning and design of a new bus terminal planned underground next to Slussen. Geosigma has been involved for some time, together with Ramböll, in this big and exciting underground project. Several different proposals regarding design were considered, but the preferred layout of the bus terminal now consists of a number of rock cavities with a span of 20-30 m and a length of 200-300 m. The bedrock cover is, in certain locations, quite thin and all works to the bedrock will have to be carefully adapted to the inner-city built environment and the intense traffic at Slussen (e.g. rail, metro, roads). Our complex project involves both rock mechanics and challenging construction planning.
Geosigma participates in the programme and the detailed planning stages with geological mapping, rock technology specifications and construction planning expertise. The project continues until the end of 2011 with the possibility of participation in further planning.
This is how the City of Stockholm describes the project:
”After 75 years of public service, Slussen is worn out and needs to be demolished and completely rebuilt. At the same time, the area will be adapted to meet the needs of the Stockholm population of tomorrow. The Slussen of the future is being built to be an efficient and safe junction, but also an attractive meeting place where the unique position between Mälaren and Saltsjön is preserved.
By 2030 Stockholm/Mälardalen is expected to grow by 500 000 inhabitants. Over a million people will be living in the City of Stockholm alone. Right now, therefore, there are some 30 major city development projects under way or planned in Stockholm. Slussen is one of the most important. The bus terminal is being positioned in Katarinaberget. Here a safe and modern junction is being created for all commuters from Nacka/Värmdö. The bus terminal is being built together with Saltsjöbanan and the metro so that one is able to change between buses, trains and the metro smoothly and indoors.
